Andrew R.

Education: Queen Mary University of London (MSc, PhD in progress), University of Minnesota (BS)

Study Zone: Andrew did his undergraduate degree in physics and, while working as a teacher, developed an interest in exoplanets and how their systems – atmospheres, geospheres, and even potential biospheres – might form, evolve and interact. Now pursuing his doctorate in astrophysics, he researches how planets change in the first few hundred million years after formation. He uses both space- and ground-based telescopes to characterize some of the youngest exoplanets ever discovered. Andrew is also working with a group of biologists to predict how the largest telescopes currently being built may reveal evidence of life on the surfaces of planets orbiting other stars.

Superpower: Andrew can see the world through your eyes…or just about. He has a talent for listening to students, asking them the questions that bring to light how they are approaching an idea, and coming up with an experiment or an example that will guide them toward deeper understanding. Additionally, he has developed frameworks that allow students to build the skills necessary for consistent success in science and math – tools that students have reported they continue to use throughout university. His coaching will develop your conceptualization and problem-solving skills, deepen your curiosity and build your confidence.

Proud Moments: Working as a science teacher and tutor for more than 10 years has delivered too many proud moments to list. Andrew has had several past students go on to publish their own research papers in scientific journals, and seen students who thought they weren’t “smart enough” to take high school physics go on to earn physics degrees (and doctorates). His favorite story took place on the first day of a physics class, when he tasked his students with performing experiments to prove Aristotle's (incorrect) theory of falling bodies. As the evidence mounted that perhaps the theory was wrong, Andrew challenged one student, saying “But it’s Aristotle.” After a beat, she replied “Well, I’m Jasmine.”
